Legal Services of the Hudson Valley (LSHV) provides free, high-quality counsel in civil matters to low-income individuals and families who cannot afford to pay an attorney and where basic human needs are at stake. The only provider of comprehensive civil legal services to all seven counties of the lower and mid-Hudson Valley, the organization’s services impact tens of thousands of people each year. LSHV has established the first Family Defense Unit in Westchester County to assist parents in managing the complexities of the child welfare system, with the belief that all families should remain together safely regardless of their situation. The unit uses a nationally recognized sample, integrating lawyers, social workers, and parent advocates to avert family breakups and facilitate the reunion of separated families.
